Jeans for Genes Day August 1st
Jeans for Genes is a major fundraiser of the Children's Medical Research Institute. Chances are you probably know someone who has a genetic disease, because one in twenty children are born with some form of genetic fault. There are children with leukaemia, muscular dystrophy, genetic defects and many other disorders. Genies are the wonderful volunteers who play a vital role in the success of the Jeans for Genes campaign. They selflessly give their time to sell badges and merchandise or even organise workplace events. You may even choose to make a one off gift or donate regularly from your credit card either weekly, monthly or quarterly here. Every small effort counts.

School holiday and emergency care
With school holidays fast approaching don’t forget that we can provide Angels to help keep children entertained. Every Angel is interviewed personally and where State laws allow, Police clearances and 'Working with Children' Checks are undertaken. You can go to work feeling confident that your children are in safe and caring hands. Even at the last minute if your planned childcare arrangements fall apart, you don’t have to lose a day's work. DIAL-AN-ANGEL Emergency Care is as close as your phone. You can read more about our childcare services here. You may even like to consider one of our Housekeeping Angels to help out over the holidays, at least when you come home it will be one less thing to think about, they can even run errands, pickup shopping and help with meal preparation.

Fit & Well – Safe exercise for seniors
Here’s a few tips to get the most from your fitness program:
• Get a checkup and medical clearance before you start
• Make a date and find a friend to exercise with you to keep you motivated.
• Wear a step counter throughout the day to count how many steps you take. Less active people tend to take about 4,000 steps or fewer per day. Aim to do 250 to 1,000 additional steps of brisk walking, until you reach 8,000 to 10,000 steps in a day.
• If it hurts, don't do it. Work around pain, not through it.
• Focus on the major muscle groups in the legs, chest and back
• Do balance exercises, as well as strength exercises. Read more here from Performance Body Works.

Top Tips

Even if you already have your very own DIAL-AN-ANGEL cleaner here's a few extra tips for winter cleaning we're sure you can use:
• Clean gutters, check for leaks and plugged downspouts
• Clean the chimneys, fireplaces, and heater filters.
• Drain petrol from the lawnmower and other yard equipment.
• Check your home for any cracks in the foundation or walls that might need sealing from water and wind.
• Trim bushes back away from the house. This is not only safer, looks neater, and reduces the chance of insect problems, but also helps reduce mould and mildew growth of your plants and gives your foundation the breathing space it needs.
• Replace all the batteries in your smoke detectors.
• Have your fire extinguisher checked to make sure it is working. If you do not have one, get one.
• Clean barbeque grills. Properly store gas bottles.
• Stock up on natural cleaning products to clean your home. The toxic build up of chemical fumes cause a multitude of health problems. This worsens during the winter when windows and doors remain shut. Newer homes are built to be somewhat air tight. They don't let cold air in or fumes out. If you are suffering from headaches, asthma or other health problems it could be caused from the chemicals you use.
• Dry winter air is hard on leather, vinyl and wood furniture. The heat from fireplaces and heaters dries and cracks them. Clean and condition all your furniture. Read more great tips here.

June 2008

Welcome
Hard to believe that I am writing the June newsletter already and that we are once again heading towards school holidays. As a parent myself, I am very aware of the need for quality childcare.

DIAL-AN-ANGEL has recognised for some time that parents are increasingly using in-home carers for their children for a wide variety of reasons. These include: an understandable preference for individual care and attention for their child/children; specific personalised care for those children with disabilities or special needs; an inability to find a convenient day care centre or family day care option to meet their needs; the desire to have emergency care in a crisis; and a requirement for before and after school care.

However, did you know that the Child Care Benefit (CCB) is applicable for in-home care, outside school hours care, vacation care and some occasional care services? To find out more read Changes to Child Care Benefit Budget 2008-09 Fact Sheet or call 13 61 50. Like me, I am sure you will agree that in-home childcare takes the stress out of school holidays!

Until next month,
Danielle Robertson
